Maps and Plans

Following on from the success of Roger Carnt’s talk on “Chalford Parish in Old Maps” this page has been set up to provide links, and where possible actual photos of old maps and plans related to Chalford Parish and the wider area.

This is currently a work in progress and we will be adding material as we find it!

Descriptions and links for some useful map sites

If you haven’t already found the “Know Your Place” website HERE  then be warned you can spend hours looking at this!  The site allows you to directly compare two maps by overlaying one on the other and moving a slider back and forth. Use the mouse scroll wheel or +/- buttons on the page to zoom in and out and help you find the area you want to look at.  Then click on “Basemaps” on the pop-up that appears when you open the page and you can scroll through and choose whichever maps you want to compare as the main and comparison maps. Note that not all maps listed are available for our area. The old OS maps in particular have fabulous detail. The tithe map and enclosure map are just two of those you can use to compare with a modern map for example.

The 1800 edition of Isaac Taylor’s County map at around 2 miles to the inch.  This map is hosted by Harvard University Library. Once the map has loaded, you should be able to zoom in and move around the map either using your mouse or the buttons on the website.  Link HERE

The full version of the 1811 Ordnance Survey drawing by Robert Dawson. The shading has been used to show the high and low ground and pre-dates the introduction of contours.  Chalford Parish is at the very bottom of this map, click to enlarge.  Link HERE

The 1828 Old Series OS Maps. This is hosted by Trove, a collaboration between the National Library of Australia and various partner organisations.  The map uses the rather lovely shading as described above instead of contours. It is clickable and zoomable using mouse or the buttons on the page. Chalford Parish is right in the top left hand corner.  Link HERE
